The TSSA is made up of volunteer sabot parents who are elected annually from each affiliated sailing club at the AGM which held during the State Championships on the March long weekend.
Sabot Regattas
The TSSA holds an annual state-wide regatta program. Individual points are accumulated from each regatta to select the Tasmanian Sabot Team which represents Tasmania at the Australian Sabot Championships. The annual Australian Sabot Championships rotate through six zones – Tasmania, Northern Queensland, Southern Queensland, Northern NSW, Southern NSW and Victoria. The Australian National Sabot Council (ANSC) is the overseeing body whose members are representatives of the six sabot zones.
Sabot Week is held in conjunction with the Australian Sabot Championships for skippers and crews who have not been selected in the state team. Sabot Week is a popular event which provides an excellent stepping stone to the Australian Championships. The transportation of sabots to these interstate events is subsidised by the TSSA, sponsors, parents & fundraising efforts.
A Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are disseminated prior to each regatta.
Three divisions of racing are catered for:
1) The senior division is open to one-up skippers who are between 13 & 15 years of age or whose 16th birthday falls during the current sailing season.
2) The junior division is open to sailors who are a maximum of 12 years of age or whose 12th birthday falls in the current sailing season. These sailors race two-up – skipper & crew.
3) The Development division is open to both junior and senior skippers who are learning how to race, wish to sail shortened courses and receive coaching support and encouragement during the race. This supported pathway is aimed at developing confidence to race in the junior or senior divisions.
Registration
All boats racing in the Regatta program must be registered with the TSSA. The current annual registration fee is $25.00 per boat. Regatta entry fees are $10.00 per boat. These fees pay for regatta prizes and trophies; state-wide coaching; coaching opportunities for sailors participating in Sabot Week and the Australian Sabot Championships; encouragement awards and administrative costs.
Each sabot has a unique sail number which is allocated by the TSSA Treasurer & Registrar of Boats. Each Sabot zone has its own prefix number – Tasmania’s number is 5.
Communication
The TSSA Committee and club delegates forward information from TSSA meetings to their sailing club members. Sabot sailors and their parents can provide feedback to the Committee via their sabot club delegate.
