TSSA Selection Process for State Representation

 (February 2010)

Criteria for selections

  1. Selections will be from March to November and will consist of  four regattas.
  2. Recognition will be given for participation and previous performance.
  3. Some events should be held at venues which closely replicate those of the upcoming nationals.
  4. Special circumstances should be given consideration if appropriate

The selection process

Selection events will consist of:

  1. TSSA State Championships (previous season)
  2. TSSA Interclub regatta
  3. Northern regatta
  4. Southern regatta

Points allocation will be as follows

  1. TSSA State Championships - 1st place=15 points, 2nd place =14 points, 3rd place =13 points and so on down to 15th place = 1 point.
  2. TSSA Interclub Regatta – 1st place = 15 points, 2nd place =14 points, 3rd place =13 points and so on down to 15th place = 1 point.
  3. TSSA Northern Regatta – 1st place = 20 points, 2nd place = 19 points, 3rd place = 18 points, and so on down to 20th place= 1 point.
  4. TSSA Southern Regatta – 1st place = 20 points, 2nd place = 19 points, 3rd place = 18 points, and so on down to 20th place= 1 point.

Note – all races will count, eg drops received in individual regattas will be included in the points calculation.

Notes

  1. Justification for choice of events

(1)   The State Championships provide a large fleet, generally fair weather conditions, and give a good indication of the children’s true sailing ability at the end of the season.

(2)   The Interclub Regatta allows a change of focus from the normal regattas and therefore is not stressful in any way for the sailors, it is often an event in which new sailors are happy to participate- therefore encouraging the “Sabot pathway”.

(3)   The Northern and Southern Regattas replace the original selection trials weekends that were held up till 2002.

  1. The point allocation is points per race using a high points system. This allows for a higher total score therefore a higher percentage average which makes the process clearer and easier to interpret.
  2. In the Sate Championships Two Up  junior skippers who will become seniors the following season will be awarded 5 points for first place,4 points for second place, 3 points for third place, 2 points for fourth place, and 1 point for fifth place, so as not to be disadvantaged in the selection process. A maximum of 5 races will count.
  3. In the State Championships Development Class sailors who will become seniors the following season will be awarded 5 points for first place,4 points for second place, 3 points for third place, 2 points for fourth place, and 1 point for fifth place, so as not to be disadvantaged in the selection process. A maximum of 5 races will count.
  4. Points cannot be swapped or promoted to other sailors.
  5. Points are allocated per sailor, so if a sailor changes boats the sailor carries the points sailed in a previous boat.
  6.  Total point ties will be resolved by the TSSA executive, team manager and coach.

Conclusion

Some children trying out for the State Selection may not have sailed in the previous State Championships, but if they demonstrate good sailing ability, participation in the other three events will allow them a fair go, as the Northern and Southern regattas have a bonus 5 point allocation.

The team manager with coaches and committee may review and adjust the final results if exceptional circumstances occur eg injury, illness or behavioral problems, but the intention is that the first twelve children selected would be the best choice for the state team.

Each team member must

  1. Be a registered and financial member of the TSSA.
  2. Be able to attend and fully participate in the National Championships.
  3. have a boat that measures fully within the class rules.
  4. Participate in all team training sessions.
  5. Agree to wear the team uniform.
  6. Agree to a code of behavior as outlined by the team manger up to and during the National Championships.
